9:11 am - Here's a Funny Story, Marriage Edition
|
Here's a funny story to share from my life, which proves to be an endless source of humor to everyone but me. On Monday, Sep 15, 2008, I was at a pizza place. The place owner/employer there, around 35, walks up to me and apologizes ten times over, then asks he could ask me for something. He then tells me he is a kurdi from Turkey, as are his family, and explains that life in this country is good and that his family doesn't have to fear for their safety; they can be open about their ethnicity. Next, he tells that his uncle has been turned down by the immigrant officials here and he will be deported back within a month, and it is a huge strain on them all to have him face the conditions and threats from Kurdistan. Then, he makes an awkward gesture and says that he noticed I'm not wearing a ring, and asked if he could introduce his uncle to me--. In other words, on Monday, a guy proposed to me on behalf of his uncle so the said uncle could obtain a permission to stay in the country.

12:02 am - End of an Era
|
|
Hello, hello!
It's done. I graduated from university with a Master's on June 11, 2008, and my mail account at university closed down on September . If anyone's ever had it: now's the time to scrape the thing. It's an end of an era, but I don't mind.
The other thing is not a source of pleasure, but it must be must cross to bear. On Monday, when I was at work, someone smashed the rear window of my car. It was parked in the company garage, and the glass was literally shattered to pieces. So, on Monday I filed a report to the police and on Tuesday papers to my insurance company. Insurance should cover for the damages except for the deductible, though it's still a hefty sum of money.
There are few repair shops that can deal with the damage (repairs are different to regular servicing, and must be carried out with specific shops), and after a round of phone calls to them on Wednesday, I got an estimate: one month(!) until I get a replacement window. The car is useless and sitting until then, and my hands are tied. The rear window is essential....
Vandals. The police weren't too interested in the damages or looking into it, so I guess it's just damage control on my own for now. Got to find a repair shop that takes less than a month even if it means expanding the search beyond the 30 mile radius....
Not doing too bad otherwise, but this was just stupid, unnecessary crap.

4:25 pm - New Tekken Story by Salysha
|
|
I have published a new story.
Fandom: Tekken Title: Bedded Rivals Summary: Jin wakes up in bed with Hwoarang. He has little recollection of what has happened. Unfortunately, everyone else seems to know well enough. Humor, slash Hwoarang/Jin.
Available at http://www.fanfiction.net/secure/live_preview.php?storyid=4171854
Completely unrelated: Happy Birthday, charnah !

Personal note: This will be the last of distractions. I have to finish my Master's Thesis by May 6, 2008. The deadline is extreme, but after that, I am looking to graduate from university.

12:00 pm - Politics
|
For what it's worth, I am extremely sorry to hear about of the resignation of Ilkka Kanerva, Secretary of State (Minister of Foreign Affairs) of Finland. He is the best thing that has happened to Finnish foreign politics in years and years. I, for one, did not see that coming when he started. This one is not an April Fool, either, although I hoped it was when I first heard the news.
(The background to this is that the Secretary sent flirtatous text messages to a woman who sought attention and sold the messages to a magazine. Before this, the press had a field day for about two weeks, making Salem's witch hunt seem like a walk in the park. I can't recall a similar determined manhunt from any recent time. The way the Prime Minister's ex-girlfriend went public with a billion magazine interviews after the breakup was almost tasteful by comparison.)

I've published a new fanfiction story, the first since 2004. I do not want to believe it has been that long.
This time the fandom is Tekken, and the story is light slash. Pairing: Jin/Hwoarang.

My Internet modem at home broke yesterday, so I have virtually no access to the Internet after finishing this. I feel like my hands are tied and I've been thrown at the deep end. But, I'll manage without, if without I must manage. Just to give you a heads-up that I will be hard to reach for the next few days.
3/7/08: New modem arrived today. It was such a relief.

11:55 pm - The Dark Knight
|
|
The trailer for "The Dark Knight" with Heath Ledger as Joker and Christian Bale as Batman looks really good. I was out of the loop with there being a new Batman movie made until the recent events brought it up. Val Kilmer had already killed it for me, just like Pierce Brosnan slaughtered James Bond. Now, while I see "3:10 to Yuma" all over Bale and there is a definite sadness about Ledger, the movie looks appealing. The Joker laughter is fantastic. No other word will do to describe it.
Fingers crossed that they make Gotham City a murky place without extravagant digital effects. I'm not too keen on the huge explosives shot, which comes some 0:35 down the trailer. Also, why Michael Caine? He just doesn't know when to quit *coughJohnGleesecough*. At least I see no Jack Nicholson in there.
See the trailer here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tkT1wdRePco.

12:58 pm - No Christmas
|
Christmas time is nearing, so now is the last chance to come clean: I'm not celebrating Christmas this year. Please don't take it to heart that I skip sending presents or cards or e-cards et cetera. There is no huge drama involved behind the resolution.
My birthday on December 20 flies under the radar where festivities are concerned, but you may acknowledge it if you want to. I'll try not to hold my breath. LOL
On an unrelated note: a comesoft_rains, thank you for the lovely card I received a while back! It was a surprise, and a lovely surprise at that!

3:04 pm - Star Trek Movie (2008) -- Are you kidding me?
|
I'm going to need therapy....
The cast of the Star Trek movie is forming fast, and in fact, several nominations escaped me. Today, IMDB dropped the bomb.
Winona Ryder will be playing Spock's mother.
Casting that I've also missed includes Karl Urban (Éomer) as Dr. McCoy and Eric Bana as Nero. Also, someone named Simon Pegg for Scotty.
Quoting one unfortunate speller on FF:net: "Wy?"
Why would you do this to me?
--
I don't much like Ryder as a person and I've disliked her in every movie I've seen her in, and that's too many movies... (The lady gets places when she's not locked up.) Haven't liked the movies themselves, either. Looking at the bright side: at least it's not Juliette Lewis. Or Kate Winslet.
Seem's that Jim Kirk's taken too, and I'm delighted to noticed that it is NOT Leonardo DiCaprio. He, too, keeps popping up on me.

12:47 pm - Nightwish's New
|
Hello, beautiful!
The new Nightwish is out officially. Not bad--the music's got a good swing to it and it has energy.
"Amaranth," which has been on radio play since the single came out, is still great. The chorus--n i c e. "Eva" is as melodious as they come, but it... is... slooooow. So far the only song I'm not convinced about is the revenge on Marcelo Kabuli, "Dark Passion Greed." Oh well--it's the thought that counts.
There's no going back to Oceanborn and Century Child, or even Angels Fall First, but this "symphony metal" gig doesn't sound too bad yet.

1:21 am - Penn & Teller -- Good TV
|
A star is born! "Penn & Teller: Bullshit!", there's my new interest. The series have been around a while, since 2003, but here, it's only on on digi. JIM, late night, under Penn & Teller.
(Parenthetical remark: Now I almost wish I had digital TV myself. Almost. Not that I hadn't wished for Teema before already, not to mention I miss all the hockey, thanks a lot, fucking YLE24. Just for that, I'll wait until September 1, 2008. Bite me.)
Anyway...
"Penn & Teller" put briefly: a hosted show, where "Mythbreakers" meets something seriously intelligent meets non-bleeb-zone (no language censoring, no false PC).
I couldn't tell if the loud, heads-on style of the show gives a headache with continued watching, but the program was just that good, from factual content to attitudes to the foul language in all the right places, which I fondly embraced.
